Freeze and Explode
Sorry I haven't posted in so long, it's been a hectic few weeks. I found this song on one of my tv guilty pleasures and thought i'd share it. It's dripping with pop, incredibly catchy, and it's a nice departure from the stuff i've been listening to.

I've been threatening to do it for years and the day has finally come. Here's my first song, written, performed, engineered by yours truly. Let me know what you think.
Dntel is badass. From The Postal Service and Figurine to his own solo stuff featuring a vast array of artists, I never get tired of him. I think the only pop/electronica/glitch artist that rivals him would be Four Tet, but I'm not sure that's a fair comparison anyway. Maybe I'll do a Four Tet post next. If only I could do glitch pop like Dentel...

I was perusing around on elbo.ws and found this. This is for everyone who needs a touch of optimism; it's catchy as hell with decently uplifting lyrics.
Oh, and, Watchmen the movie did not do the book justice (obviously), but what's her name is hot as fuck and it was decently entertaining...though a tad soulless.
The Whigs' main claim to fame: they were the last big thing out of Athens. This song is a really good example of how garage rock can be beautiful even in its simplicity: about 75% of the song is based on one note. It's catchy as hell, I keep getting it stuck in my head, so I figured why not post it up here. This is really the only encounter I've had with them, but it might be enough of a basis for me to buy a ticket to their upcoming 40 watt show. Enjoy.
I just realized there hasn't been a new post in more than a week, so I decided to throw this up. This album is kind of old news, but I just recently rediscovered it and felt the need to share this particular song. I think his voice is badass and the song structure, progression, and development are really creative. I also think it's funny that these guys had lackluster success here, moved to the UK and blew up, then came back here and sold-out Madison Square Garden. Enjoy.
So...that sucks. I posted the new single by them and less than 24 hours later received an e-mail from blogger about how I was in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. So I can't post it. But don't you worry! I'll figure something out.

I never really pay attention to the Grammy's; in fact, I think music as a whole has become so vast in it's repertoire that having something like the Grammy's is pointless. I ended up watching this Grammy's show anyway and I was pleasantly surprised. Not by the awards given out, but by the performances and news given. I've posted what I think were the two best performances of the night...M.I.A.'s due date was the date of the Grammy's and she performed anyway. She's just about the only person bad ass enough to pull off a scantily clad outfit in such a condition, but she pulled it off amazingly. Next up is Radiohead with 15 Step (wtf? Radiohead plays the Grammy's?); to be honest, I was a little let down by Radiohead's performance, only Yorke and Greenwood showed up...but being accompanied by a fucking marching band playing in 5/4 is pretty sweet.
Oh, yeah, Blink 182 announced that they are reforming. I was a Blink fan a long long time ago, so I thought that was a pretty cool bit of info. Thank god Billy Corgan didn't get on stage and announce plans to do some other game-changing project, I don't think I can handle another let down.

So, Billy Corgan is done with making full length albums. From now on, he's sticking strictly to releasing singles; the first was with GLOW, which I posted earlier. I suppose this is the second in line...this song debuted on a Hyundai commercial for the Super Bowl and was made available to download for free from the Hyundai site after that. It's pretty boring; Pitchfork described it well by saying "You liked Zero, right? This isn't as good."
This is my favorite song off M. Ward's 2009 release, "Hold Time". The song features Zooey Deschanel; I think Zooey has one of the best female voices ever...I mean, come on, we all saw Elf. Unfortunately, Deschanel's part is pretty minor in this song, but hey, she's still hot. The album as a whole hasn't been released yet, I listened to a leaked copy over the course of this week, and it's pretty damn good. In addition to Deschanel, the album also features guest performances from Lucinda Williams as well as members of Grandaddy and DeVotchKa. I hope M. Ward comes somewhat close to Athens this year...
Bambara is a rock trio from Athens. I've had the awesome experience of hanging out with both Blaze Bateh and William Brookshire from the group, both are really cool guys. This song is from Bambara's debut self-titled album; it's my favorite song off the album. These guys are incredibly unique and have tons of energy, I'd absolutely recommend seeing them live if you get the chance. Let me know what you think!

U2's New Single "Get On Your Boots" (kinda sucks).

Here's a kind of guess quality youtube radio rip of U2's new single from their upcoming album No Line on the Horizon. It's typical U2 minus the Edge's obsession with guitar delay....so...I'm not a fan. I think it sounds like the band is going for a more organic and rough sound, but Brian Eno's sleek production kind of works against that. All in all, it's a disappointment.

What do you get when you have NYC hip-hop producer Minty Fresh Beats do a mashup of various Jay-Z and Radiohead songs? A badass fucking collection of songs, that's what. I'd even venture as far as to say this is better than Danger Mouse's Grey Album. Yeah, yeah, I know...you're skeptical because so many mediocre mashups have been done, especially with Jay-Z...but this one's different. Minty Fresh has a great ear for both beats and combinations. Furthermore, he's actually a Radiohead fan; proof is in "Change Order", which uses "Gagging Order" a beautiful Radiohead b-side with just two instruments acoustic guitar and vocals. I never thought in my wildest dreams that Gagging Order would work with someone rapping over it...but somehow it does. Enjoy.
I'm sure everyone has heard this song, but someone just recently showed me this video and...it's amazing.
Blitzen Trapper is an experimental folk band out of Portland; I found them through an online Sub Pop sampler and thought they were pretty sweet. Furr is a really chill folk song with some mild sonic experimentation in the midst of the really clean production. It struck me as a song that would go well in a Wes Anderson movie.
Oh, sorry about the lack of posts over the break. No more breaks for a while. I hope.

Even though Kate Nash is kind of old news, everyone can appreciate a bad-mouthed girl who sings with a thick cockney accent and is the absolute queen of piano pop. Her songs are catchy as hell and, at times, absolutely inappropriately hilarious. I was introduced to Nash by a lady friend of mine who found her while perusing through Paste. She asked if I'd ever heard of her, and then started belting out her songs a cappella with a perfect english accent, and I was hooked.
When Nash was younger, she fell down the stairs and broke her foot and was subsequently bed-ridden for several weeks. During that time, her mom bought her an electric guitar and she taught herself how to play and began songwriting. I'd like to think that if I was ever bed-ridden for a long period of time, I'd be as productive, but I doubt I'd ever be able to write something as clever as Foundations or as catchy as Mouthwash. Check her out, she's sexy as hell.
Where is My Mind?
I just recently rediscovered my absolute favorite cover of all time: Nada Surf does the Pixies. I may even venture to say that I like the cover more than the original; it's brilliantly produced and more sophisticated than the original, but then again, the Pixies were never going for sophistication, so I guess that's a little unfair. Anyway, if you've never heard it, give it a listen, it's a really interesting take on the original song.
